Illuminati II
The White issue included an interview with designer Peter Ingwersen the creator of Noir, an ethical line of timeless chic pieces that produce their own organic and fair trade cotton supply in Africa.  Peter was a fascinating interview, his company isn’t as large as some of the well known every day names in this industry but it is more responsible than most. The pieces he created had an...

Kenji's on our ones to watch list
Central Saint Martins Graduate Kenji Kawasumi delighted me with a few moments to talk about his graduate collection. I would consider him an intelligent designer as he is looking at many natural fibres such as wood shown in the skirt below.  He seems to be inspired by almost anything and doesn’t see any limitations when designing. This was one of the images that didn’t make it into...

Moritz and I
I had a chance to interview one of my design heroes Moritz Waldmeyer who collaborated with Hussein Chalayan on a collection inspired by weather. It was an eye opening education to find out why someone decides to work with technology and smart clothing and what inspires them to keep going.  This is still a growing a field but Think magazine is keeping up with the growth, the changes and the...

Charity: Pink Slipper Project
My friend Meredith from the CompasssionFashionProject always has the greatest charity causes going and I thought I’d like to share this one. The Pink Slipper Project collects and makes slippers for women and children living in shelters.                          It`s not something I have ever thought about but when women leave an abusive situation without their own resources, they tend to...

Lara is on our ones to watch list
Although Vancouver, British Columbia has dominated the eco fashion industry in Canada I do mean dominated, it would appear that Calgary,Alberta has thrown a feather in the ring by way of Architect turned designer Lara Presber. Currently residing in Calgary her SS 2011 collection was inspired by The Art Gallery of Alberta’s curvy exterior.  Not only has this designer chosen to use organic...

What is Zero waste fashion? Zero Waste fashion can be generally classified into two interconnected areas. There is Zero-waste pattern design, where the pattern to make the garment is specifically designed to generate no waste (typically 15-20% of the cloth needed to make a garment is wasted) or you can have Zero-waste at a company level – where the garments are cut in the traditional way but the...

Coming to a shop near you
Last night at the Golden Globe awards ethical fashion graced the red carpet by way of design label Prophetik. You knew it was only a matter of time before it happened right? This organic cotton jersey dress wasn’t at the awards last night but it’s a great example for this coming summer season, so I thought I’d post it. To see which dress was on the red carpet and who was...

Strength in numbers
Part of my business plan for Think magazine has always included a charity, I honestly didn’t know when or how it was going to happen, but sometimes charities pick you, at least that’s happened in the past to me.                                       So when Meredith from The Compassion Fashion Project and I got together, we both became immediately excited at the possibility of...

Resort collections
We’re already working on the resort issue and it got me thinking about my wardrobe if I were going away. I’m fairly certain I’d live in maxi dresses gladiator sandals and great accessories.      That’s why I love this cuff, it would go perfectly with my imagined attire. The two little love birds in a reworked vintage setting was created by Indie designer Heather Saiki....

Berlin Fashion Week
Running along side Berlin Fashion Week is the sustainable fashion platform called THEKEY. I don’t think platform does this event justice, of course there will be a fashion show for buyers and fashion followers but THEKEY has a mission to educate as well.                     Kicking off next Thursday the theme this year is conspiracy, a conspiracy to present sustainable fashion and...

Ethical clutch
I am always amazed at the use of paper and the many forms it can take on. Not only is this little clutch perfect for the coming summer season it also supports a village.  Local artisans in Uganda reused paper to make this clutch from a local techniquie, the idea is to create sustainability in Ugandan villages while collaborating on accessories for sale in the west. I definitely one.

Xmas gift list
Here’s a couple of gifts to myself I purchased recently on Etsy.  I have a penchant for accessories and these two pieces were incredibly priced. First was this triple horse head ring, that was still for sale. Second was this brass statement necklace, that I’m planning to wear this summer. I haven’t received them yet, the necklace has been shipped, when it arrives I plan to...

Daddysneatness on her personal style What are your favourite items in these images? I prefer the vintage watch, is a little lucky charm for me and it contain an irrisitible vintage spirit. But I adore the bowling shirt too, I love the power of that colour.   Where did you get these items? The first is an ancient gift from my daddy, he loved ancient things and I’ve already explained that my...

Things to wear during the holidays
I thought I’d search for some festive holiday outfits this week that have some assembly of sustainability and I found this rather sweet dress in holiday colours and embellishments from a company called Adhesif. Based in Vancouver a city which seems to be positioning themselves as the eco capital of Canada, Adhesif is of the principle that all can be made new again by reworking vintage...

In issue 007
I really enjoyed getting to know Ceren Taskent the current lead designer at Organic by Roman. She opened our eyes to a collection that is fluid, timeless and beautiful. A collection that could never be regarded as disposable.        Although this is a line based in Turkey, I can see it crossing over to the west seamlessly. Ceren is definitely a master at cutting and draping, we can’t wait...

As fickle as the fashion industry is, charitable efforts for sustainable resources isn’t anything new. Philanthropist Lauren Pierce collaborated with women from the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a means of creating financial indepedence through tradition. Each scarf is hand dyed.
